10 Things I Wish People Understood About Atheism

10 Things I Wish People Understood About Atheism

Atheism is often misunderstood. People think that atheists are against religion, but that’s not necessarily true.

Here are 10 things I wish people understood about atheist beliefs. Let’s start with a definition: Atheism is, simply put, the lack of belief in a god or gods. That’s it. It doesn’t mean we’re against religion or believe that all religious people are stupid (which is just as biased as saying all atheists are heartless).

It doesn’t mean we don’t have morals or that we’ll do anything and everything because there’s no one watching over us. So what does it mean to be an atheist? Keep reading to find out.

We Don’t All Hate Religion

Just because we don’t believe in a god or gods doesn’t mean we hate religion. In fact, many atheists are quite spiritual, and some even belong to religious groups. We just don’t believe in a higher power or creator deity.

We Don’t All Believe in Science

Not all atheists are scientists, and not all scientists are atheists. Atheism is simply the lack of belief in a god or gods, not a belief in science.

We’re Not Heartless

Just because we don’t believe in a god or gods doesn’t mean we’re heartless. Atheists can be kind, compassionate people who care about others. We can have morals and values without believing in a higher power.

We’re Not All Desperate for Attention

Some people think atheists are just attention-seekers, but that’s not true. We’re not all trying to shock or offend people with our beliefs (or lack thereof). We’re just living our lives like everyone else.

We’re Not Trying to Convert People

Some people think atheists always try to convert people to atheism, but that’s not true. We’re not all trying to convince people that our way of thinking is better than theirs. We’re just sharing our beliefs and letting people make up their minds.

We Don’t Always Think We’re Right

Just because we don’t believe in a god or gods doesn’t mean we think we’re right and everyone else is wrong. In fact, many atheists are quite open-minded and don’t have a strong opinion on the matter. You might have encountered some atheists who push their beliefs on you, but we promise not all of us are like that.

We Don’t All Think Religion is Stupid

Just because we don’t believe in a god or gods doesn’t mean we think religion is stupid. In fact, many atheists have a great deal of respect for religious people and the things they stand for. Maybe some of us do believe that religion is inherently flawed, but that doesn’t mean we think everyone who follows a religion is dumb. Okay, some of us think it’s dumb, not going to lie.

We Don’t Think Life is Meaningless

Just because we don’t believe in a god or gods doesn’t mean we think life is meaningless. In fact, many atheists find life to be quite meaningful without the need for a higher power. We love to live and recognize that this is the only life we have so we try living it to the fullest.

We’re Not All Angry

Some people think atheists are always angry and bitter, but that’s not true. We come in all shapes and sizes and are not all angry. Like why would we be angry? I usually don’t get this line of thought, and when you start arguing in this direction, you start to sound dumb.

We’re Not All the Same

Just because we share a lack of belief in a god or gods doesn’t mean we’re all the same. We come from all walks of life, and we have different beliefs. We’re just atheists.

Atheism is not a religion, and it’s not a belief system. It’s simply the lack of belief in a god or gods. And that’s perfectly okay.

Conclusion

I hope this has helped clear up some misconceptions about atheism. Remember, atheism is simply the lack of belief in a god or gods. It doesn’t mean we’re against religion or believe all religious people are stupid. We’re just like everyone else, except we don’t believe in a god or gods. Thanks for reading. 2. A fascinating discussion is definitely worth comment. I do believe that you should publish more about this issue, it may not be a taboo matter but usually folks dont speak about such subjects. To the next! Cheers!!

  3. I have always been an atheist. My father escaped from Poland with his brothers and so did my mother’s parents – from Russia. I feel so much better now when I realize I’m not the only one who doesn’t believe in religion and especially don’t believe in god (and I will not use that word with a capital letter G.) I’m an 82 year old female who has been through lots of ups and downs and I never ever thought that if I believed in a phantom god everything would get better.
